With eleven official languages, South Africa’s cultural diversity has led the nation to be affectionately dubbed the “Rainbow Nation”. This extraordinary cultural mix is also mirrored by the country’s varied climatic zones.
While the summer rainfall regions of South Africa vary from semi-arid desert to lush sub-tropical vegetation, the Western Cape, however, is uniquely Mediterranean. A common theme however is the country’s limited water supplies for crop production, making it one of the most water-stressed countries in the world from a farming perspective.
Despite the challenges, South Africa remains one of only twelve countries in the world to produce consistent agricultural export surpluses, with citrus and table grapes leading the charge. The country also produces a staggering variety of agricultural products, from wool to nuts, and wine to dates, as well as the internationally unique practise of farming with wild and dangerous game.
The adoption and implementation of conservation agricultural (CA) principles and practices has been identified by most relevant global and local policies, programmes and institutions as the solution to soil degradation. South Africa has a favourable and pointed national policy environment in place to support the promotion of CA among both farmers and across the agricultural value chain.
With almost four million residents, Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa, internationally recognizable by its iconic landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Point.
Cape Town has much to offer as a travel destination, blessed as it is with the country’s top six tourist attractions within an hour’s drive from the city centre. All within easy distance is The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Table Mountain, Cape Point, the Winelands, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Robben Island.
Cape Town has a mild Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures in June ranging
from between a minimum of 10˚C to a maximum of 20˚C.
The Cape Floral Kingdom is home to over 7 000 plant species found nowhere else in the world. Cape Town was also the first city outside of Europe to be awarded Blue Flag status due to the quality of its beaches and world-class facilities, as well as for its safety and cleanliness.
What’s more, Simon’s Town is home to a thriving colony of Africa’s only penguin
species, the Jackass Penguin, an absolute must-see.
We look forward to welcoming you to Cape Town!
